Hiring a freelancer can be a daunting process for some companies if they have never dealt with freelancers or contractors before. In this blog post, I’m going to try and put your mind at ease by outlining some of the benefits such as costs, contracts and delivery speed. Below are the top reasons why you should work with a freelance technical SEO.
No need for a full-time specialist employee
You may have a couple of well-rounded digital marketers and SEOs within your team. They will understand the general concepts of Technical SEO and what to look out for. It is unlikely though they possess the knowledge to undertake a full in-depth technical SEO audit and write up all the supporting documentation or competently undertake a failed migration recovery for eCommerce heavyweights such as Magento or Salesforce eCommerce.
To bring that level of technical SEO skillset into your team will require an investment of £30,000 – £40,000 per year. Then you have pension contributions, holidays, sickness, etc. You might not even need a full-time technical SEO consultant. So why not hire a freelancer instead?
Cheaper and faster than hiring a dedicated agency
Specialist technical SEO agencies are not cheap. For a competent agency with the right in-house expertise, expect to fork out between £120 – £150 per hour. Agencies have overheads, covering such things as the talent (tech SEOs), project managers, office space and the directors’ salaries. They are running a business after all. Expect a technical SEO audit to cost around £5,000 with a decent agency.
Of course, there are cheaper SEO agencies out there you could hire with well-rounded SEO expertise. Do they possess the knowledge and skillset to competently diagnose and rectify complex technical SEO issues? I doubt it, they are probably just delivering an audit based on Screaming Frog findings.
It could be weeks before an agency can dedicate resource to your business
There’s one other and very important aspect of working with a freelancer that is advantageous over an agency. It is the ability to jump on a project quicker than an agency. SEO agencies usually plan out their workloads for up to 4 – 8 weeks in advance. If your business website has taken a downturn in SEO visibility (again, such as a failed migration or an algorithm update) and you need urgent help.
It could be weeks before an agency can dedicate resource to your business. Contracts need to be written up, sense checked and signed. The agency then also has to assign a project manager, go through the meet and greets, etc before starting any work.
No contracts, hire by the hour
The point is that a technical SEO freelancer can almost jump on the issue straight away to diagnose and put together a plan of action to remedy the causes. No contracts, hire by the hour (or day) a reasonable rate (I charge £35 per hour).
So there you have it, these are the top reasons that I can think of (there are loads more, that’s for another day) on why you should hire a freelance technical SEO. If you would like to reach out to me for a friendly no-obligation chat, please feel free. The contact information is in the footer.
